Caretaker of Silent Proximity
Chapter 1: The Caretaker of Silence
Twilight spread gently over the old residential building, which was hidden in the corner of a busy city. The light of the setting sun fell through the heavy curtains of the balcony doors and cast long shadows into the rooms. Anna had just moved into this apartment, and the smell of fresh paint and new furniture was still in the air.
She was amazed how quiet it was here. Yet there was a particular charm that permeated this silence. The janitor lived not far from her, in a small back room. Max. She had seen him pass by once — a man who didn't speak much, using his hands diligently at work. He was strong, with an air that was as mysterious as it was attractive.
One evening, after a long day at work, Anna decided to break the slippery silence of her new home. On the way to the kitchen, she saw the caretaker's closed door. A strange impetus to contradiction. The desire to break the silence overcame her. She involuntarily moved closer, her curiosity crossed the wall of patience.
A quiet thought whispered to her that Max was perhaps not a fan of silence, that he was looking for closeness in his seclusion. She imagined herself meeting him, this uninvited connection that could have developed between them.
Anna took a deep breath and then knocked on the door. The heartbeat roared loudly in her ears.
The door opened slowly, and Max stood there, his eyes mysterious, his posture penetrating. “Can I help you?” He asked calmly, but there was a sparkle in his voice that filled the room. She felt the tension between them, the creeping desire to bridge the proud distance.
Something unsaid happened in the silence of the room. Anna took a step forward, her hands on the door frame. The world outside seemed to disappear.
“How often are we lonely even though we're around?” She whispered, and the words hung in the air like a promise.
Max took a step closer, the space between them seemed to explode and seized them with his presence. Her eyes met and she felt the heat rise between them.
But that's when it happened—the first hesitation, a moment that felt like an ocean between them, and she knew that the silence awaited an act of determination.
